Calcium During Whelping

Did you know that adding calcium at the right time during labor can make whelping or queening go faster? And that can decrease your chances of puppy or kitten loss and keep your moms from getting too tired. On this episode of the Pet Care Pro Show, we are talking about the do’s and don’ts when it comes to using calcium during whelping or queening.

Why Should You Use Calcium

Did you know that adding calcium at the right time during labor can make whelping or queening go faster? And that can decrease your chances of puppy or kitten loss and keep your moms from getting too tired. On this episode of the Pet Care Pro Show, we are talking about the do’s and don’ts when it comes to using calcium during whelping or queening.

Calcium is a mineral that plays a role in both muscle contraction and in building the frame we stand on. It allows the uterine muscle to slide past and shorten, resulting in effective uterine contractions. Low blood calcium leads to ineffective contractions and nervousness, often resulting in puppy loss.

How to Use Calcium Supplements

Knowing when to use calcium supplements when whelping is key. If you supplement with calcium before whelping starts, you shut down the pregnant dog’s ability to fine tune the minute-by-minute demand needed for whelping and milk production. By staying away from supplements pre-whelping, you can let her regulate and gear up for the needs of whelping and milking. This helps prevent issues in the pregnant dogs, such as eclampsia or milk fever.

In early labor when the female starts nesting or her temperature drops one degree, that’s when you can give mom the first dose of calcium. Fast-absorbing supplements like Breeders’ Edge® Oral Cal Plus are very helpful. Before the first puppy hits the ground, the goal is to get three to four doses in mom. She won’t be eating at this time, so a small amount of gel orally is the only choice. She will accept it readily. This helps to dilate the cervix and get the first puppy on the ground faster. This will help the female not get so tired with a long delivery and she can mother better because she won’t be so exhausted.

  1. Great video. I have a momma dog about ready to give birth, next week actually. What about the dosing for mom after the pups are born? The goal I know is to get her eating again as quick as can be done within a few days. But after her birthing process finishes give her a dose of the oral calcium once a day? And for how many days? Only until she is eating again or daily throughout the first 3 weeks of feeding puppies?

  2. Am completely amazed by your product calcium plus! My female had been to vet 5 times! 3 was for calcium shots then I would have to follow up with 6x IV shots under skin! She had 7 pups depending on her!! She wouldn’t eat! Tried literally everything! Only thing she would eat was canned Royal prescription digest! Literally nothing else! This went on for almost 3 weeks! Vet said to take pups on her! Wanted to at least have them on till 3 weeks! The ups and downs with her calcium plummeting was insane! Once tried your product she would eat puppy food! Ran out of your calcium plus! So this morning I realize it was definitely your product that had her doing so much better! For I ran out yesterday! Had to give her another calcium shot of 100 cc under skin! Your product is supposed to arrive today! So hope so! It is amazing calcium how it makes unbelievable difference! Thought it was only for welping and birthing! It’s the difference between milk fever taking ups away from mother to mother nursing her pups!
    Thank you!

  3. Question: I give my bitches OxyMate prior to whelping, OxyMomma after, and Oral Cal Plus during labor. Should they receive an additional calcium supplement while nursing, or does OxyMomna cover her calcium needs while nursing?

  4. The video was confusing it did not answer all the questions

It didn’t tell me what the dose is for breeders edge oral cal plus or how to find the correct dose.

It also says Post whelping to give 2 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorous but it does not say which calcium to use is that the oral cal plus???

It also said to use balanced calcium daily through whelping, ok what calcium is that? Is it the oral cal plus??? or a different calcium?

I came away from this with more questions than it answered.
